Complex Care

Range of Motion Exercises

Range of motion (ROM) exercises are a complex care task approved under the MSA-1904. Trained caregivers perform passive or active-assistive ROM exercises to prevent contractures, maintain flexibility, and improve circulation.

What This Includes

  • Passive ROM for all major joints (shoulders, hips, knees, ankles)
  • Active-assistive ROM when the care recipient can partially participate
  • Following the prescribed exercise protocol from the care plan
  • Slow, controlled movements within comfortable range
  • Monitoring for pain, stiffness, or resistance
  • Documenting exercise completion and any concerns

Who This Helps

  • Individuals with paralysis or limited voluntary movement
  • People at risk of contractures from prolonged bed rest
  • Those recovering from stroke with affected limbs
  • Seniors with severe arthritis or joint stiffness
